Ornate Style - Just A Little Reminder

Hello!

Happy Friday!  I'm looking forward to the weekend and the opportunity to spend some time with my sewing machine.  I have a quilt top that I finished a few weeks ago but haven't had time to finish piecing the backing.  Let's hope that the planets align and that the sewing will really happen...

Today's post is a card that took me three days to work out.  I'm not sure why, but that's how long it took.  Sometimes the elements just don't come together the way you've envisioned it and then you have to punt.  I have to say that my work table is a disaster area with all kinds of stuff scattered around that I pulled out trying to come up with a solution.

The focal point wasn't the issue -- it was the background.  I needed something that would enhance the focal point but it seemed that everything I tried either overwhelmed the focal point or caused the focal point and background to blend together.  It was a struggle.  But I think I found the solution.  What do you think?

OrnateStyle_JustAReminder

This card begins with a panel of Terracotta Tile embossed with the Painted Texture 3D Embossing Folder.  Versamark ink was lightly tapped over the embossed panel so that the ink touched primarily the raised areas.  Then I immediately covered the panel with Heat & Stick Powder, tapped off the excess back into the container, and then melted the powder with the Heat Tool.  Tip:  With Heat & Stick Powder, you don't want to cook the powder -- you just heat it until it melts and then stop.

The panel was then covered with Gilded Leafing Embellishment.  Here's how I did that to minimize the explosion of leafing all over my crafting area:

  1. Turn off all fans and minimize drafts around the work area
  2. Find a clean plastic shoe box with a lid and gently put the Gilded Leaf Embellishment in the box
  3. Place the panel sticky side down into the box and press down to allow the leafing to stick to the Heat & Stick Powder
  4. Keeping the panel in the box but not in contact with the leafing, use fingertips to knock the big stuff away from the panel
  5. Keeping the panel in the box but not in contact with the leafing, use a clean Blending Brush, sponge, or stipple brush continue to brush the excess leafing from the panel
  6. Remove the panel from the box and replace the lid.  Use the Heat Tool to set the Heat & Stick Powder.  If necessary, reopen the box and use the brushing tool to remove the last of the loose leafing
  7. Whatever you do, keep the lid on the leafing box when you are not actively working with the leafing

A piece of Vellum was die cut with the rectangular frame from the Ornate Frames dies (3" x 4-5/8").  The vellum was adhered at the center of the Terracotta Tile panel.  Tip:  Place the adhesive at the center of the back of the Vellum so that it doesn't show through when the focal point is added.  Mossy Meadow Braided Linen Trim was wrapped around the panel and Vellum twice 1-1/2" above the bottom of the Terracotta Tile panel adhering the ends of the trim at the back of the panel.  The panel was adhered at the center of the Early Espresso card front.

The large bunch of flowers from the Ornate Style stamp set was stamped on Thick Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The flowers and leaves were colored with Stampin' Blends Markers:

  • Daisies:  Bronze for the center and Light Daffodil Delight along the shading lines
  • Small six-petal flowers:  Light and Dark Daffodil Delight for the petals and Light Cajun Craze for the centers
  • Center Mum:  Light and Dark Cajun Craze
  • Bottom Mum:  Light and Dark Calypso Coral
  • Leaves:  Light and Dark Old Olive

Paper Snips were used to fussy cut the bunch of flowers and an X-Acto Knife was used to cut away the white in between the leaves and flowers.  The bunch of flowers was adhered at the center of the Vellum frame using Stampin' Dimensionals.

The "Just A Little Reminder That You Are Loved." greeting, from the A Wish For Everything stamp set, was stamped on Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The right and left ends were punched with the rounded slot of the Treasured Tags Pick A Punch.  The greeting was adhered to the card front using Stampin' Seal for the part that covers a leaf of the bunch of flowers and Stampin' Dimensionals under the remainder of the tag.

OrnateStyle_JustAReminder_Inside

The daisy image from the Ornate Style stamp set was stamped twice at the lower left corner of a Basic White panel using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The daisies were colored with Stampin' Blends Markers using Light Daffodil Delight along the shading lines of the flower petals, Light and Dark Old Olive for the leaves, and Dark Old Olive for the stems.  The "happy" sentiment from the A Wish For Everything stamp set was stamped at a jaunty angle at the upper center of the panel using Terracotta Tile ink.  The "Birthday" sentiment, also from the A Wish For Everything stamp set, was stamped below and slightly to the right of "happy" using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The panel was adhered at the center of the inside sentiment area of the card base.

OrnateStyle_JustAReminder_Envelope

A scrap piece of cardstock was placed inside the Medium Basic White Envelope at the lower left corner (keeps the Stampin' Blends Markers from bleeding through to the back of the envelope).  The daisy image was stamped twice at the bottom left front corner of the envelope using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The daisies were colored using the same Stampin' Blends Markers as used for the inside sentiment area of the card.

I've heard that lots of folks are rather intimidated when considering using the Gilded Leafing Embellishment.  It's really not hard to use and actually rather fun if you are aware of your surroundings to minimize the opportunity for the leafing to take flight around your crafting area.  Give it a try!

Friendly Flamingo -- Stand Tall

Hello!

Every once in a while I go a little bit crazy when I make a card.  I get going and then keep going and going and going because I'm having so much fun.  The card for today's post is the result of one of those events.

Anyone who knows me knows that I love flamingos.  It started with the plastic kitschy flamingos that you put in your yard.  My neighbor across the street took exception to those bright pink lovelies and made lots of snide comments.  So I decided to have his yard "flocked" with about 50 of those flamingos for his birthday and it went from there.  I now have quite a collection of flamingos -- some cute, some artistic, some downright ugly, and others just for fun.  They are outside the house, inside the house, in the swimming pool, on the towels...well, you get it.  There are LOTS!

Needless to say, when Stampin' Up! releases a flamingo stamp set, you know my name is on it!  I'm especially thrilled that this offering comes with coordinating dies.  A match made in pink heaven!!

FriendlyFlamingo_StandTall

This card begins with a panel of Basic White cardstock, a torn piece of scrap paper, Blending Brushes, and the ink colors of Pool Party and Balmy Blue.  I tore away the edge of the scrap piece of paper, placed it across the cardstock near the top edge and then applied Pool Party ink with the Blending Brush.  I repeated this process, moving the paper down the cardstock and changing the angle of the paper as I went to create a cloudy background of white and Pool Party.  Then I started the process all over again, this time using the Balmy Blue ink--sometimes to cover the white and sometimes to overlay the Pool Party, and sometimes covering both.  I haven't done this kind of cardstock inking in a long time and back then I used sponges.  I have to say that the effect I achieved with the Blending Brushes is much nicer.  The Basic White cardstock panel was adhered at the center of a slightly larger mat of Old Olive and then adhered at the center of the Flirty Flamingo (what else?) cardstock card front.

The tall vines image was stamped twice on Pear Pizzazz cardstock using Pear Pizzazz ink and die cut with the corresponding die.  The tall vines image was stamped three times on Old Olive cardstock using Old Olive ink and die cut with the corresponding die.  One Pear Pizzazz vine and two of the Old Olive vines were adhered with varying heights along the left side of the Basic White panel using Multipurpose Liquid adhesive.  The top edge of a piece of Crumb Cake cardstock was torn away and the dotted "sand" image from the Waterfront stamp set was inked, stamped off, and then stamped over the torn cardstock using Crumb Cake ink to cover the cardstock.  The Crumb Cake "sand" was adhered along the bottom of the Basic White panel with the left, bottom, and right edges of the Crumb Cake cardstock flush with the left, bottom, and right edges of the Basic White panel.

The flamingo image was inked with Flirty Flamingo ink and the beak colored with the brush tip of the Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker.  The image was stamped on Basic White cardstock and die cut with the corresponding die.  The bullet tip of the Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker was used to color the dot of the eye of the flamingo and the Light Daffodil Delight Stampin' Blends Marker was used to color the white area on the beak.  The flamingo was adhered to the Basic White panel using Multipurpose Liquid adhesive.  A Pear Pizzazz vine was adhered to the left of the flamingo using Multipurpose Liquid adhesive.

The flower and fern image was stamped on Basic White cardstock using Pear Pizzazz ink and die cut using the corresponding die.  The Light Daffodil Delight Stampin' Blends Marker was used to add color along the center lines of the line of three plumeria.  The hibiscus flowers were colored with Light and Dark Calypso Coral and Light and Dark Rococco Rose Stampin' Blend Markers.  (These are the colors of the flowers of two of the hibiscus plants and plumeria tree in my yard.)  The flower and fern image was adhered over the "sand" below the vines and flamingo using Stampin' Dimensionals.

The "stand tall and stand out" greeting was stamped on a narrow strip of Vellum using Staz-On Jet Black ink.  The left end of the Vellum was punched with the banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch.  The vellum was adhered to the card front with the right end of the Vellum flush with the right edge of the Basic White panel and the bottom edge of the Vellum 1-5/8" above the bottom edge of the Basic White/Crumb Cake.  I used the Xyron "X" to create a sticker to adhere the Vellum so that the adhesive doesn't show through the Vellum.  If you don't have a Xyron, you could use the Adhesive Sheets.

FriendlyFlamingo_StandTall_Inside

The flamingo image was inked with Flirty Flamingo ink, the beak colored with the brush tip of the Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker, and the image stamped along the left side of a panel of Basic White cardstock.  The eye was colored with the bullet tip of the Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker, and the white area of the beak was colored with the Light Daffodil Delight Stampin' Blends Marker.  The remaining Old Olive tall vine was adhered along the left edge of the cardstock panel using Multipurpose Liquid adhesive.  The "just be YOU" sentiment was inked with the brush tip of the Basic Black Stampin' Write Marker and stamped just below the neck of the flamingo.

FriendlyFlamingo_StandTall_Envelope

The single hibiscus flower image was randomly stamped over the envelope flap of the Medium Basic White Envelope using Flirty Flamingo ink.  Tip:  Place a scrap piece of paper between the envelope flap and the body of the envelope to contain the stamping to the envelope flap.

As I mentioned earlier, I had so much fun creating this card.  I especially enjoyed creating the one-of-a-kind background using the torn paper and Blending Brushes.  What kind of custom background would you create with the Blending Brushes?  I'd love to see what you make!

Quite Curvy -- Hello

Hi There!

I hope you had a great weekend.  My husband and I were able to do some chore things and some fun things.  One of the fun things I did was make the cards you'll see today and Wednesday.

Since I still had the Quite Curvy bundle on my work table, I decided to make another card using this adorable stamp set and dies.  This time I wanted to pair the bundle with a couple of items from the Ornate Garden Suite that I haven't shown a whole lot of love as yet:  Ornate Floral 3D Embossing Folder and Ornate Garden Specialty Designer Series Paper.

QuiteCurvy_Hello

This card begins with a panel of Early Espresso cardstock.  A slightly smaller panel of Ornate Floral Specialty Designer Series Paper was adhered to the right side of the panel with the top, right, and bottom edges of the Designer Series Paper 1/16" from the top, right, and bottom edges of the Early Espresso cardstock.  The right edge of a panel of Old Olive cardstock was die cut with the dotted edge die from the Curvy dies and then embossed with the Ornate Floral 3D Embossing Folder.  The Old Olive panel was adhered to left side of the Early Espresso panel so that the top, left, and bottom edges of the Old Olive panel are 1/16" from the top, left, and bottom edges of the Early Espresso cardstock.  A piece of Whisper White Polka Dot Tulle ribbon was wrapped around the Old Olive/Early Espresso panels and tied into a bow with the knot of the bow 1-3/8" from the top edge of the Old Olive panel and the left edge of the ribbon 1" from the left edge of the Old Olive panel.  The Old Olive/Early Espresso/Designer Series Paper panel was adhered at the center of the Terracotta Tile card front.

The "Hello" greeting was stamped on a strip of Basic White cardstock using Early Espresso ink.  The left end of the strip was punched in the banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch and then matted with a strip of Early Espresso cardstock with the left end also punched in the banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch keeping the right edges of the Basic White and Early Espresso flush.  The greeting banner was adhered to the right side of the card front with the right edge of the banner flush with the Designer Series Paper and the top edge of the Early Espresso mat 1" from the top edge of the Designer Series Paper.

QuiteCurvy_Hello_Inside

A piece of Old Olive cardstock was die cut with the dotted edge die and then embossed with the Ornate Floral 3D Embossing Folder.  The Old Olive cardstock was adhered along the top edge of a Basic White panel with the top, left, and right edges of the Old Olive cardstock flush with the top, left, and right edges of the Basic White panel.  The "you're one in a MILLION" sentiment was stamped just below the Old Olive cardstock using Terracotta Tile ink following the curve of the die cut cardstock.

QuiteCurvy_Hello_Envelope

A piece of Ornate Garden Specialty Designer Series Paper was adhered to the envelope flap of the Medium Basic White Envelope.  Paper Snips were used to trim away the excess paper using the edge of the envelope flap as a guide.

With all the craziness in the world right now, it's hard not to feel cut off from people.  How do you let the people you care about know that they are still important to you when you are supposed to be social distancing?  That's easy...send them a card!!  You'll feel good thinking about them while you make their card AND they will be tickled to receive the card in the mail.  Just think about all those great loving vibes passing between the two of you -- even if this person lives only a few blocks away.

Quite Curvy -- Thinking Of You

Hi There!

One of the great things about paper crafting is that you can develop your own style.  This doesn't mean that your techniques have to be unique in the paper crafting world, it's that you can explore and decide what techniques are the best fit for the outcome(s) you would like to achieve.  The great thing about Stampin' Up! is that their product line is flexible enough to support whatever style you may decide to embrace -- even if you decide to change your style from project to project.

My current style includes clean lines and bright colors using simple design layouts.  I think this card is a good example.

QuiteCurvy_ThinkingOfYou

This card begins with a panel of Dandy Garden 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper die cut with the Curvy dies across the middle:  the detailed curve 1-1/4" from the top edge and the straight line curve 1-3/8" above the bottom edge to create a space across the middle.  The top and bottom pieces were adhered to a panel of Basic White cardstock with the bottom, right, and left edges of the top piece of the Designer Series Paper flush with the top, right, and left edges of the Basic White panel AND the bottom, left and right edges of the bottom piece of Designer Series Paper flush with the bottom, left, and right edges of the Basic White panel.  The center piece of Designer Series Paper is set aside for use later.

The "thinking of you makes my day" greeting was stamped on the Basic White panel just below the bottom edge of the top piece of Designer Series Paper following the curve of the Designer Series Paper using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.

The floral garland image was stamped three times on Thick Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The floral garland was colored with Stampin' Blends Markers using Light and Dark Balmy Blue for the flowers and Light and Dark Granny Apple Green for the leaves and stems.  The floral garlands were die cut with the corresponding dies from the Curvy dies.  Two of the garlands were adhered along the curves of the bottom piece of Designer Series Paper, and the third garland was adhered along the right side curve of the top piece of Designer Series Paper.

A piece of Old Olive ribbon from the Ornate Garden Ribbon Combo Pack was wrapped around the top piece of Designer Series Paper/Basic White panel and tied in a bow to the right of center.  The Designer Series Paper/Basic White panel was adhered at the center of a slightly larger panel of Old Olive cardstock and then at the center of the Calypso Coral card front.

Two facing birds were stamped on Thick Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colored with Stampin' Blends Markers.  The right facing bird was colored with Light So Saffron and Light and Dark Cinnamon Cider markers.  The left facing bird was colored with Ivory and Light and Dark Smoky Slate markers.  The birds were die cut using the corresponding bird dies from the Curvy dies.  The birds were adhered over the bottom right floral garland using Mini Stampin' Dimensionals.

QuiteCurvy_ThinkingOfYou_Inside

The leftover piece of Designer Series Paper (from the card front) was adhered along the bottom of a panel of Basic White cardstock (the right end is 1" high and the left end is 3/4" high).  Since the top and bottom edges of the Designer Series Paper are curved, adhere the paper to the Basic White panel with the right and left sides of the paper flush with the cardstock and then trim the bottom edge of the paper flush with the bottom edge of the cardstock using Paper Snips.

The "wishing you the happiest of birthdays" sentiment was stamped just above the Designer Series Paper using Memento Tuxedo Black ink following the curve of the paper.

Die cut two pieces of Old Olive cardstock with the branch die cut from the Curvy dies and adhere one branch along right end of the curved paper and the other branch rising from the right side of the cardstock (use teeny tiny dots of Multipurpose Liquid Adhesive).  The third bird (left facing) was stamped on Thick Basic White cardstock using Memento Tuxedo Black ink and colored with Light Crumb Cake and Light and Dark Balmy Blue Stampin' Blends Markers.  The bird was die cut with the corresponding bird die from the Curvy dies and adhered over the Old Olive branches using two stacked Mini Glue Dots.

QuiteCurvy_ThinkingOfYou_Envelope

A piece of Dandy Garden 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper was adhered to the envelope flap of the Medium Basic White Envelope.  Paper Snips were used to trim the paper along the edge of the envelope flap.

The reason I bring up design style with this card is that while this card has a few more elements than I would normally adhere to a card front, the basic design is still simple, with bright colors and clean lines.  Even better, I was able to achieve all of the stamping and die cutting elements of this card with one stamp set/die bundle.  Thank you, Stampin' Up!

Four Season Floral -- Happy Birthday

Hello!

Today's post features another card made with the Four Season Floral stamp set from the Beginner's Brochure.  This time, I went a couple of steps beyond a Clean And Simple (CAS) card by adding a few layers and some texture.

FourSeasonFloral_HappyBirthday

This card begins with a card base of Basic Black cardstock.  The card front was embossed with the Subtle 3D Embossing Folder.  A panel of Magenta Magness was also embossed with the Subtle 3D Embossing Folder and adhered to the card front with the right and bottom edges of the Magenta Madness panel 3/16" from the right and bottom edges of the card front.

A panel of Basic White cardstock was covered with the roses image using Magenta Madness ink.  The panel was matted with a slightly larger panel of Basic Black and adhered to the Magenta Madness panel with the right and bottom edges of the Basic Black mat 1/8" from the right and bottom edges of the Magenta Madness panel.

The "Happy Birthday" greeting was stamped on a Basic White cardstock strip using Magenta Madness ink.  The left side of the cardstock strip was punched with the banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch.  The left side of a slightly larger Basic Black cardstock strip was punched with the Banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch and then used to mat the greeting with the right ends of the Basic White and Basic Black strips flush.  The left side of a narrower strip of Magenta Madness cardstock was punched with the Banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch and adhered along the back center of the Basic White/Basic Black strip so that the Magenta Madness strip extends beyond the left end of the Basic White/Basic Black strip 1/2" and the right ends of the Magenta Madness and Basic White/Basic Black strips flush.  The strips were adhered to the stamped Basic White panel with the bottom edge of the greetings strips (Basic Black) 5/8" above the bottom edge of the stamped Basic White panel.

Three Matte Black Dots were adhered in a vertical row at the top left corner of the Basic White stamped panel with the top dot 1/8" below the top edge of the panel and the three dots 1/8" from the left side of the panel.

FourSeasonFloral_HappyBirthday_Inside

The roses image was stamped to cover a strip of Basic White cardstock using Magenta Madness ink.  A narrow strip of Basic Black cardstock was adhered behind the top edge of the Basic White strip and the two strips adhered along the bottom edge of a Basic White panel.  The "The Best Thing About Today Is You." sentiment, from the Well Said stamp set was stamped on a strip of Basic White cardstock.  The left end of the strip was punched with the Banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch.  The left end of a slightly wider/longer strip of Basic Black cardstock was punched with the Banner tail slot of the Banners Pick A Punch and then used to mat the Basic White punched strip.  The punched strips were adhered at the upper center of the Basic White panel with the right ends of the punched strips flush with the right side of the panel and the top edge of the Basic Black punched strip 1-1/8" below the top edge of the Basic White panel.

FourSeasonFloral_HappyBirthday_Envelope

The roses image was stamped along the top edge of the envelope flap of the Medium Basic White Envelope using Magenta Madness ink.  Tip:  Place a scrap piece of paper between the envelope flap and the body of the envelope to keep the stamping confined to the envelope flap.

I hope that you'll take a look at the Beginner's Brochure to see the great stamp sets and kits that are only shown in this brochure.  There are so many great ideas and fun images in the brochure and they are only available until May 3rd.
