The 2018-2019 Annual Catalog is Here! Love What You Do

Inky Friends Design Challenge #6 -- Happy Birthday To You

Hi There!

Welcome to Inky Friends Design Challenge #6.  Every 4th Friday of the month a new design challenge is posted.  This time around we are working with a color combination from the 2017-2018 Annual Catalog on page 63 using the colors of Bermuda Bay, Crushed Curry, and Melon Mambo.

When you look at the photo from the catalog, you'll see that none of the cards shown use all of the colors--they only use one or two of the colors.  So I decided to challenge myself to use all of the challenge colors in one card.  With bright and happy colors like Bermuda Bay, Crushed Curry, and Melon Mambo, a birthday card seemed to be just the thing to make.

A piece of Watercolor Paper was spritzed with water and then Crushed Curry, Bermuda Bay, and Melon Mambo ink was washed over the top, middle, and bottom third of the Watercolor Paper and allowed to dry.  [Tip:  The wash for each color was made of 2 drops of reinker to 4 drops of water and then spread over the Watercolor Paper with a wet Aquapainter.  Using more water will dilute the color and using less water will deepen the color.]

Once the Watercolor Paper has dried, the medallion Pattern Party Decorative Mask was placed over the Watercolor Paper and Shimmery White Embossing Paste smoothed over the mask and Watercolor Paper using the Palette Knives.  [Tip:  I use the Silicone Craft Sheet as a base when working with embossing paste as the paste will not stick to the surface of the craft sheet.  It is important to work quickly with embossing paste as it begins drying as soon as it has contact with air.  Therefore, as soon as the paste is in place, remove the mask and rinse off the mask, palette knife and craft sheet IMMEDIATELY.]  Set the Watercolor Paper aside to allow the embossing paste to dry completely.  Depending upon the thickness of the paste, this can take between 10-30 minutes.

Adhesive Sheets were adhered to three pieces of Basic Black cardstock.  The adhesive side of the cardstock was placed on the cutting plate of the Big Shot with the Happy Birthday Thinlits on top of the cardstock.  The cardstock was die cut with the Big Shot.  This process was repeated for the two remaining pieces of cardstock.  The adhesive sheet was removed from the back of one of the die cuts and the die cut adhered on top of one of the remaining two die cuts.  The adhesive sheet was removed from the back of the remaining single die cut and the die cut adhered to the top of the two adhered die cuts.  The adhesive sheet was removed from the stack of die cuts and the stacked die cuts adhered at a jaunty angle across the top two thirds of the Watercolor Paper.

A length of Whisper White Sheer Ribbon was wrapped around the Watercolor Paper at an angle below the die cut and tied in a bow at the center.  A Mini Glue Dot was placed behind the knot of the bow to hold the ribbon in place.

The classic label image from the Happy Birthday Gorgeous stamp set was stamped on a piece of Whisper White cardstock using Bermuda Bay ink.  The "to you" image was stamped inside the label image at the left side of the image using Memento Tuxedo Black ink.  The label was punched with the Classic Label punch and the left side of the label adhered along the right side of the Watercolor Paper using Mini Glue Dots with the bottom edge of the label 1" above the bottom edge of the Watercolor Paper.  The remainder of the label was cut flush with the right edge of the Watercolor Paper using Paper Snips.

The Watercolor Paper was matted with a slightly larger piece of Basic Black cardstock and adhered at the center of the Thick Whisper White card front.

The dotted balloon image was stamped on a piece of Bermuda Bay cardstock using Bermuda Bay ink.  The outline portion of the Hooray balloon image was inked with the brush tip of the Bermuda Bay Stampin' Write Marker and stamped over the dotted balloon image.  The balloon was punched with the smaller balloon of the Balloon Bouquet punch.  This process was repeated with Crushed Curry ink and Stampin' Write Marker for a piece of Crushed Curry cardstock and for Melon Mambo ink and Stampin' Write Marker for a piece of Melon Mambo cardstock.  The straight line image was stamped three times near the left center using Memento Tuxedo Black ink to create the strings for the balloons.  The balloons were adhered over the strings.

The classic label image was stamped on a piece of Whisper White cardstock using Bermuda Bay ink.  The "celebrate" image was stamped in the left side of the label image using Melon Mambo ink.  The "you" of the "to you" image was inked with Melon Mambo ink and stamped at the right side of the label.  The label was punched with the Classic Label punch and adhered at the center to anchor the balloon strings.

The medallion mask was placed over the left front of the Medium Whisper White Envelope.  [Note:  A scrap piece of paper was placed along the right edge of the mask to prevent ink from straying to the non-masked area of the envelope front.]  Crushed Curry, Bermuda Bay, and Melon Mambo inks were sponged onto the envelope front through the mask to mimic the watercolor wash on the card front.

The 2017-2018 Stampin' Up! Annual Catalog and 2018 Occasions Catalog are coming to an end and the excitement is building for the 2018-2019 Annual Catalog as more and more samples are posted on Pinterest, Stampin' Up! Demonstrator blogs, and other on-line forums.  However, there's still time to take advantage of the discounts on select retiring items from the two catalogs and to purchase the bundles at a 10% discount.  Most of the bundle items are continuing to the next Annual catalog; however, for those that do the bundle discount will be going away as there will be great new bundles for you to discover.  The Happy Birthday Gorgeous/Happy Birthday Thinlits bundle featured in this blog post is a great example.

So, are you inspired to create with this color combination??  I hope so!  And when you do, please share your creation with the Inky Friends!  Each challenge will run for two weeks and at the end we'll pick a winning project.  Here's how it works:

  1. Every 4th Friday of the month a new sketch can be found on the Inky Friends blog by clicking HERE
  2. Because this is a color challenge, the colors you must use are Bermuda Bay, Crushed Curry, and Melon Mambo (you can use compatible colors and add neutrals as needed)
  3. Create something new that has not been posted before
  4. Post your creation on your blog or online gallery and please provide a link back to our challenge to the Inky Friends blog – provide a direct link to your project or post to the Linky which you can find at the END of our Inky Friends blog post
  5. YOU HAVE TWO WEEKS TO PLAY ALONG – then the challenge will be closed and WE PICK A WINNER – it could be you!

I can't wait to see what you'll make!

I love how the colors blend together! Beautiful cards!! I just love playing with the embossing paste too. This looks great over the bright colors! I forget about the masks. You've inspired me to get mine out and play!

I think your card is so bright and cheery. I love the embossing paste. Very nice.
