B.Y.O.P. -- Graduation 2016 Gift Card Holders

Hi There!

Graduation season has come to an end, but I wanted to take the time to share the gift card holders I made in May for some awesome college graduates.  The first is for my nephew, Casey, who graduated from Auburn University in Alabama.

The second is for my cousin, Morgan, who graduated from St. Louis University in Missouri.

And the third was for Ashleigh, a young lady who takes care of my husband and I at our favorite restaurant every Sunday evening.  We've been following her progress through her years at the University of Central Florida and wanted to let her know we were proud of her accomplishment.

You can see that all of the cards use the same design; it's just that each card features the colors specific to each graduate's school.

  • The Auburn University colors are Burnt Orange and Navy, so I used the retired color of Dusty Durango and Night of Navy.
  • The St. Louis University colors are a specific Pantone Blue and White, so I used the retired color Brilliant Blue and Whisper White.
  • The University of Central Florida Colors are Gold and Black, so I used the retired color Hello Honey and Basic Black.

I saw this card design in action when I participated in a Shoebox Swap while attending On Stage 2016 in April.  I wish I could tell you who used this design for their swap because it's certainly a winner.  Here's how the cards are made using Ashleigh's card as a guide:

  • Cut a piece of Basic Black cardstock to 4-1/4" x 11" and score at 2-3/4" and 5-1/2" along the 11" length.  Fold the cardstock in half at the 5-1/2" score line and create a Mountain fold at the 2-3/4" score line
  • Cut two pieces of Whisper White cardstock to 2-1/2" x 4".  With the Basic Black cardstock laying open to it's 11" length, adhere the two white pieces, centered, in the two folded areas
  • Cut one piece of [Retired] Gold Fancy Foil Designer Vellum (diagonal stripe) and adhere over the piece of Whisper White at the outside edge of the folded areas using Mini Glue Dots placed behind the stripes near the corners of the velllum
  • Cut a square of Basic Black cardstock to 1-1/2" x 1-1/2".  Create a tassel from Gold Metallic Thread and use a [Non-Stampin' Up!] Black 1/8" Mini Brad to affix the tassel at the center of the Basic Black Square using the Paper Piercer and Stampin' Pierce Mat.  Adhere the square at the upper center of the vellum using a Stampin' Dimensional

  • Cut a piece of Hello Honey cardstock to 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" and score at 4-1/4" along the 8-1/2" length.  Fold at the score line and adhere folded piece, centered, to the opened 4-1/2" x 11" card base in the open area beyond the 5-1/2" score line with the fold opposite the 5-1/2" score line
  • Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock to 3" x 3-3/4".  Using Basic Black Archival ink, stamp the "Congratulations, GRAD!" greeting from the B.Y.O.P. stamp set near the upper center of the cardstock.  Adhere the Whisper White cardstock, centered, to the front of the folded 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" Hello Honey cardstock
  • Using a Blender Pen and [Retired] Hello Honey ink, fill in the "GRAD!" part of the greeting with Hello Honey ink
  • Cut a piece of Basic Black cardstock to 1" x 3".  Adhere a 1" x 3" piece of Gold Fancy Foil Designer Vellum (diagonal stripe) to the Basic Black cardstock [Note:  For this piece I used the Xyron "X" to create a sticker from the vellum to adhere to the Basic Black.  As you can see, there is a smudgy look where the adhesive sticks to the Basic Black between the gold stripes.  In hindsight, I should have used Mini Glue Dots behind the gold stripes near the corners of the vellum.]
  • "Close" the 4-1/2" x 11" card base at the folds over the 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" folded card and make a small pencil mark on the Whisper White where the 2-3/4" fold sits atop the Whisper White cardstock.  Open the card base and adhere the 1" x 3" vellum/cardstock strip across the 3" x 3-3/4" Whisper White below the pencil mark so that this strip is not visible when the card base is closed

  • Cut a piece of Whisper White cardstock to 3" x 3-3/4".  Using Basic Black Archival ink, stamp "B.Y.O.P.*" near the upper center of the cardstock
  • Using a Blender Pen and Hello Honey ink, fill in the stamped image with Hello Honey ink
  • Using Basic Black Archival ink, stamp "*buy your own present!" near the bottom edge of the Whisper White cardstock
  • Adhere the Whisper White cardstock, centered, inside the folded 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" Hello Honey cardstock in the bottom area
  • Cut a piece of [Retired] Gold Fancy Foil Designer Vellum (polka dots) to 3" x 3-3/4".  Using the [Retired] 2-1/2" circle punch, insert one 3" end of the vellum about 1/3 of the way into the punch and punch a divot
  • Place Tear & Tape Adhesive along the non-punched edges of the back of the vellum and adhere, centered, to the top inside of the folded 3-1/2" x 8-1/2" Hello Honey cardstock.  This pocket is designed to hold most gift cards

One of the best things about participating in swaps is that you make and/or receive design gems like this gift card holder.  All three of the graduates made a point of telling me how much they enjoyed receiving the card AND the gift card.  They really appreciated that I took the time to look up their school colors to personalize the card for their respective schools.
