A Pocket of Memories
A Floral Hello

Another posting drought.  Sigh.  However, the last couple of weeks have been rather hectic; in good and not so pleasant ways.  I'll fill you in with the next few posts.

I'll begin with my trip to the 2011 Stampin' Up! Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah.  I had such a great time with the ladies from the 3-2-1 Stamp! team led by Catherine Harwood.  A HUGE Thank You to Catherine, Beth Daniels, Grace Benjamin, Diane Simpers, Sandy Myers, Sandy Mitchell, and Barb Kasten for all the fun and fellowship during a very busy week.  I learned so many things during the classes I took and can't wait to share them with you!

The afternoon before the Convention opened, I traveled to a nearby hotel to participate in a Meet & Greet and card front swap with Stampin' Up! demonstrators that belong to the Stampin' Addicts on-line community.  I had a wonderful time meeting so many great demonstrators I've corresponded with on-line through this positive interactive site.  Here is the card I made for the swap.

Isn't it cute?  And such a fun way to send a note to someone just to let them know you're thinking of them!  The folks at the Stampin' Addicts swap only received the card front; however, I'll be sharing the complete card and envelope with you.

Most folks know that I'm not a "purple person" and really struggle to use this color in my designs.  However, I was really taken with the new In Color, Wisteria Wonder, and wanted to use it in a monochromatic card to showcase the color.

We begin with a card base of Elegant Eggplant.  A piece of Wisteria Wonder cardstock was embossed using the Big Shot with the polka dots Texturz plate from the Backgrounds 1 Texturz plates combo.  The edges of the cardstock were sponged with Wisteria Wonder ink, a piece of Whisper White 1/4" grosgrain ribbon was wrapped around the cardstock and knotted on the front, and then the cardstock was adhered to the card front.  Below the ribbon knot, a series of circles were punched from Whisper White, Elegant Eggplant, and Wisteria Wonder cardstock scraps using the 1 1/4", 1", and 3/4" circle punches respectively.  The Wisteria Wonder and Elegant Eggplant circle edges were sponged with their respective inks and the Whisper White circle with Elegant Eggplant ink before they were adhered one on top of the other.  The "hi" sentiment from the Fabulous Phrases stamp set was stamped at the center of the Wisteria Wonder circle using Elegant Eggplant ink and a 2mm Basic Pearl was placed over the dot on the "i".  The circles were adhered to the card front with Stampin' Dimensionals.

The focal point of the card consists of layers of Whisper White and Elegant Eggplant cardstocks.  The bottom layer is Whisper White cardstock rolled with the Starburst Jumbo Wheel using Elegant Eggplant ink and die cut with the largest flower from the Fun Flowers Bigz L die and the Big Shot.  Then the edges were sponged with Elegant Eggplant ink and the petals curled under by placing each petal between my thumb and the edge of the bone folder.  The next layer uses Elegant Eggplant cardstock embossed with the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions embossing folder and the Big Shot then die cut with the medium sized flower from the Fun Flowers Bigz L die.  The edges of the die cut flower were sponged with Elegant Eggplant ink and the petals curled up by placing each petal between my thumb and the edge of the bone folder.  The center of this layer was adhered to the center of the bottom layer with SNAIL.  The third layer uses an image from the Posy Punch Hostess stamp set stamped on Whisper White using Wisteria Wonder ink.  The stamped image was punched with the Fancy Flower punch and the edges sponged with Wisteria Wonder ink.  The "Hello" image from the Posy Punch stamp set was stamped on Whisper White cardstock using Elegant Eggplant ink, punched out with the 1" circle punch, and adhered to the center of the Fancy Flower-punched third layer with SNAIL.  The center of this layer was adhered to the center of the second layer with Stampin' Dimensionals.  The 3/4" circle flower image from the Posy Punch stamp set was stamped on Whisper White using Wisteria Wonder ink, punched out with the 3/4" circle punch, and adhered to the center of the Fancy Flower-punched layer with Stampin' Dimensionals.  A 5mm Basic Pearl was placed at the center of the 3/4" circle flower image.  The focal point was adhered near the upper left corner of the card front using Stampin' Dimensionals.

The flower image was stamped three times along the left edge of a piece of Whisper White cardstock using Wisteria Wonder ink and the edges of the cardstock sponged with Elegant Eggplant ink.  The cardstock was adhered to the inside sentiment area of the card using SNAIL.

The flower image was stamped one more time at the lower left front corner of the Medium Whisper White envelope using Wisteria Wonder ink.  The "hi" sentiment was stamped on one of the petals using Elegant Eggplant ink.  The Starburst Jumbo Wheel was inked with Elegant Eggplant ink and rolled across the envelope flap.  The edges of the envelope flap were sponged with Elegant Eggplant ink.

While I was at the Stampin' Addicts Meet & Greet waiting for my swap to be called, I received a text message from my husband to tell me that our Golden Retriever, Maxwell, had passed away.  I knew that I might receive this message during the week I spent in Utah; however, I just hadn't expected to receive the message my first full day there.  About a month earlier, I had taken Maxwell to the vet because he had a cough.  When the first treatment plan was unsuccessful, I returned to the vet a couple of weeks later, when I found out that Maxwell had an aggressive form of lymphoma.  One of the tumors was on his sternum and was pressing against his throat.  He had additional tumors in his lung that were causing him some distress when he was active.  It was apparent that the cancer had spread and that we had a very limited amount of time left with Maxwell.  Maxwell was 7 years old.  Here's one of my favorite pictures of Maxwell taken a year earlier.  My niece, a pet groomer, entered Maxwell in a local grooming competition.

So here I am, sitting at a table with fellow demonstrators silently weeping over my phone, when the lady seated next to me asked if she could help me.  I showed her the text message and she leaned over to her daughter (Stampin' Up! Demonstrator Lisa-Marie Hazlet) to let her know my situation.  She couldn't share the text message with her daughter because she was blind.  Lying on the floor behind Lisa-Marie's chair was her guide dog, Max, a light Golden Retriever.  During a break between the organized swaps during the Meet & Greet, I walked over to Max and sat down with him for a while.  He greeted me with a handshake and seemed to understand my need to be with him and love on him for a while.  Certainly, at that moment, Max was an angel of mercy in my grief.

A little while later, my swap was called and I was pleased to find that the demonstrators at my table were also a part of this card front swap.  Here is the card that I received from Lisa-Marie.

This card is just so pretty!  Lisa used two new In Colors, Pool Party and Island Indigo on this simple, yet eye-catching card.  The tools used on this card are the 3/16" corner rounder, the Blossom Bouquet Triple Layer punch, and the circle punch from the Bitty Shapes Punch Pack.  It's hard to see in the picture, but that tiny circle has Dazzling Diamonds glitter on it.  The lovely sentiment comes from the Cherish Friendship stamp set.

Thanks to Lisa-Marie and her mother, along with Max the guide dog, for their compassion and caring spirit.  They made a distressing situation just a little more bearable.

I'll be back soon with more from the Convention.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Maxwell was a handsome young man.

I have tears after reading about your loss of Maxwell. I have 2 golden retrievers and understand that they become family. I am sorry for your loss.

Oh Mickey, hugs on your loss of Maxwell (and boy he looked spiffy in the pic above). I'm all teary-eyed because I know it's hard losing a pet family member! God sure does work wonders, doesn't he? Having Max the guide dog there to give you some love in your time of need.

I cry easily and I'm tearing up over your story about Max. Lucky to have had him around for 7 years and I'm sure he filled your life with love.

Your card? Great!

So sorry to hear about Maxwell. Glad that you were surrounded by good people and Max when you got the news though.

By the way... love your card!

I am so, so sorry to hear about your puppy. Big furry hugs from Biscuit & Jack.

Love the cards, too.

Heidi Baks

Aww, Mickey, I'm sorry for your loss!

Diane Simpers

Just beautiful! I haven't tried the texture plates yet, but I like what I see!

Hi Mickey, first let me say how sorry I am about Maxwell. It is really difficult to lose a pet as they are part of the family. I am also sorry to have missed you at the convention. I was on the watch and reading people name tags in case I did run into you (not literally). From your comment on my blog, your life is changing as well. I hope your are taking some time for yourself and enjoying some of your free time. Take care Karen

Mickey - I am terrible sorry that I missed this post when you put it up. I am thankful that God put a furry golden angel where you needed him and so sad for you. Beautiful picture of Maxwell. Your swap card is amazing and Lisa-Marie's is all the more special with your story.
