Cheerful Blossoms

Hello there!  Thanks so much for stopping by to visit!

Here are a couple of bright and cheerful cards to make for a special friend (or two or three).

You can't help but smile when you see them; they're just so upbeat and happy.  I designed these cards for the May meeting of the SASS Stamp Club and the ladies were pretty tickled to make them.  AND they were also excited to make the Stationery Folder to hold these cards.

Since there's already a post describing how to make the stationery folder, I'll just point you there for the instructions (including cardstock measurements and a scoring diagram).  The major difference between this folder and the previous folder is the focal point for the front of the folder.  Since the process for creating the focal point is nearly the same as will be discussed for the card fronts, I'll just encourage you to read on and point out any specifics for the folder along the way.

We begin with the card bases of Bashful Blue and Real Red.  A piece of Crumb Cake cardstock is punched along one long edge with the Scallop Trim Border punch and adhered approximately 1/4" from the left, top, and bottom edges of the card front with the Scallop Trim Border facing toward the right side of the card front.  (Note that the Scallop Trim Border punch is not used for the Crumb Cake mat on the focal point for the Stationery Folder.)  For the Bashful Blue card, the next mat layer is Real Red which is adhered, centered, in the un-punched area of the Crumb Cake cardstock.  For the Real Red card, the next may layer is Bashful Blue cardstock.  (Note that the layers for the Stationery Folder focal point are, from bottom to top:  Crumb Cake, Real Red, and Bashful Blue.)

Swipe the Embossing Buddy over the Whisper White pieces of cardstock and, using Versamark, stamp the stem with leaves image from the Bold Blossom stamp set.  Cover the ink with Wild Wasabi Embossing Powder and tap the excess back into the container.  Melt the embossing powder with the Heat Tool.  Tear a piece of Wild Wasabi cardstock to create the "grass" and adhere to the bottom of the Whisper White cardstock aligning the left, right, and bottom edges of the Wild Wasabi cardstock with the left, right, and bottom edges of the Whisper White cardstock.  Then adhere the Whisper White cardstock, centered, on top of the Real Red (or Bashful Blue) cardstock on the card front.

Now it's time to use the Blossom Bouquet Triple Layer punch.  Woohoo!  These new punches are so fun!  But they do work a little differently than a regular punch.  There's a slide lever to select one of the three punch styles incorporated into this punch.  So depending upon which punch style you select, the punch will only close so far.  With the Blossom Bouquet Triple Layer punch, the first layer (the solid background setting) closes the punch one-third of the way, the second layer closes the punch two-thirds of the way, and the third setting (the open petal flower) closes the punch all the way down.  I know the first couple of times I used this punch, it felt a little weird; but it didn't take long to get used to the punch action.  Here are a few more useful tips for these style punches:  be sure to leave the punch sitting flat on the work surface; place the heel of your hand over the punch label on the top of the punch when you press down on the punch; and, most importantly, be sure the cardstock you insert into the paper slot of the punch is completely inserted (all the way to the back of the paper slot).

For the Bashful Blue card, use the punch to create a Real Red solid background and a Bashful Blue open petal flower.  For the Real Red card, use the punch to create a Bashful Blue solid background and a Real Red open petal flower.  (For the Stationery Folder focal point, use the punch to create a Bashful Blue solid background and a Real Red open petal flower.  The flower pieces are adhered together with SNAIL and then adhered at the top of the Wild Wasabi-embossed stem, again, using SNAIL.  A 1/2" circle of Crumb Cake cardstock is adhered to the center of the open petal flower.  A small dot of Crystal Effects is placed at the center of the 1/2" Crumb Cake circle.  To complete the flowers, pieces of Linen Thread are inserted into the button holes of two Bitty Buttons (scallop circle for the Real Red card, 4-petal flower for the Bashful Blue card, and heart for the Stationery Folder focal point).  Then the Bitty Button is placed on the dot of Crystal Effects.

To add a touch of bling to the card, the butterfly image was stamped on Whisper White cardstock (Real Red in for the Real Red card and Bashful Blue ink for the Bashful Blue card).  The butterfly was cut out with Paper Snips and the polka-dot area of the wings dotted with adhesive from the 2-Way Glue Pen.  Chunky Essentials Glitter (White) was dusted over the wings and the butterfly was attached to the card front with a Mini Glue Dot placed on the center back of the butterfly.  Then the wings were carefully lifted up.  (Note that the Stationery Folder does not include the butterfly on the focal point.)

The inside sentiment area of the cards were lined with Whisper White cardstock.  The sentiment was stamped near the upper center with Wild Wasabi ink.  At the lower left corner, the small flower was stamped randomly (Real Red for the Bashful Blue card and Bashful Blue for the Real Red card).  For a fun finishing touch, the butterfly image was stamped just above the flowers (Bashful Blue for the Bashful Blue card and Real Red for the Real Red card).

The flower and butterfly stamping was repeated at the lower left front corner of the Medium Whisper White envelopes.

Need to do something cheerful on a dreary day?  Make a few of these cards and you'll be smiling from ear to ear!

Have fun!

Another Visit to the Garden

Hello!  Thanks so much for stopping by to visit!

Here are a couple of scrapbook pages that I designed for the SASS Stamp Club meeting last weekend.  These pages feature the Beyond the Garden Designer Series Paper and a surprise!

The surprise is hidden journaling pockets on each page.  A 3" x 3" piece of Whisper White cardstock is pulled from the hidden journaling pocket using the Pacific Point or Tangerine Tango tabs.  The hidden journaling pocket is made by attaching a Whisper White Mini Envelope to the back of the Whisper White cardstock square on each page.

(click on each scrapbook page to see larger image)

On the back of the Whisper White cardstock square at the center of each page, Sticky Strip is placed along the left, right, and bottom edges.  The envelope flap is removed from a Whisper White Mini Envelope and Sticky Strip applied to the left and right sides of the back of the envelope and across the middle back of the envelope just below the opening (the Sticky Strip will look like an "H").

(click on diagram to see larger image)

The envelope is then adhered to the back of the Whisper White cardstock, lining up the top of the envelope with the top of the Whisper White cardstock.  Then the Whisper White cardstock is adhered to the center of the Wild Wasabi Textured cardstock base pages.

(click on scrapbook page to see larger image)

For the left page, a square of Tangerine Tango cardstock was adhered, centered, to the Whisper White cardstock square.  Across the center of the page, a strip of Beyond the Garden Designer Series Paper was adhered.  Punched circles of Tangerine Tango (3/4" circle) and Pacific Point (1/2" circle) cardstock were placed at the right and left ends of the strip of Designer Series Paper.  Gold Brads were inserted into the center of the punched circles.  For the hidden journaling pocket, the tab image from the Perfect Punches stamp set was stamped on Pacific Point cardstock using Pacific Point ink.  The word "wishes" from the Fabulous Phrases stamp set was stamped at the top of the tab image using Basic Black ink.  The tab image was punched out with the Rounded Tab punch, folded at the center, and adhered over the top center of the 3" x 3" square of Whisper White cardstock.  This cardstock is inserted into the hidden journaling pocket.

(click on scrapbook page to see larger image)

For the right page, a square of Pacific Point cardstock was adhered, centered, to the Whisper White cardstock square.  Three corners of two 2" x 2" squares of Beyond the Garden Designer Series Paper and three corners of two 2" x 2" squares of Tangerine Tango cardstock were punched with the 3/16" corner rounder.  The squares were placed on the Pacific Point cardstock with the pointed edge of each square at each corner of the Pacific Point cardstock leaving just a smidge of a border of Pacific Point cardstock along the edges.  For the hidden journaling pocket, the tab image from the Perfect Punches stamp set was stamped on Tangerine Tango cardstock with Tangerine Tango ink.  The word "dreams" from the Fabulous Phrases stamp set was stamped at the top of the tab image using Basic Black ink.  The tab image was punched out with the Rounded Tab punch, folded at the center, and adhered over the top center of a 3" x 3" square of Whisper White cardstock.  This cardstock is inserted into the hidden journaling pocket.

For the non-scrapbookers of the SASS Stamp Club, I used the left page designs to make this card:

If you're looking for a way to share an important message with a loved one or to document a private thought or feeling, a hidden pocket is just what you need.  I've used a Mini Envelope for these pages, but any size envelope will work depending upon the size of the scrapbook page and the cardstock it will be anchored to.  And your pockets don't have to be hidden.  You can make them a part of the page element for photos and memorabilia, too!

Scrapbooking is what brought me back to papercrafting 12 years ago.  I wanted to find a way to present my children with the story of their childhood in pictures and prose.  A couple of years later, a good friend of mine invited me to go with her to a Stampin' Up! workshop.  Scrapbooking as an art form was in its infancy and being able to use rubber stamps to enrich the art on the scrapbook page was, for me, the answer to my prayers.  I began attending local scrapbook and rubber stamping expos, taking classes, and going to more Stampin' Up! workshops.  I was hooked!  In the next few years, as Stampin' Up! increased their line to meet the needs of scrapbookers, I became a very steady customer of Stampin' Up! products.  It wasn't long after that I was asked to consider becoming a demonstrator, if only to receive the demonstrator discount!  I pondered this idea for a couple of years and finally realized that being a demonstrator was the best way for me to share all that I had learned about papercrafting.  So I signed up!  I've been a Stampin' Up! demonstrator for almost 6 years now and I've enjoyed all the opportunities I've had to meet new people, establish lasting friendships and, most importantly, share what I love to do!

Dogs & Cats & Paws

Hi there!

Before I get started on today's stamping post, I'd like to share a moment from Monday morning.  The last launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour, STS-134.

(Image Credit:  NASA, Taken from the Saturn 5 Facility at Banana Creek)

Because of a low cloud deck, we were only able to see the launch for 21 seconds, but the excitement and exhilaration weren't diminished for those of us standing outside the Launch Control Center.  One benefit of the low cloud deck was that it kept the sound of the launch close to the ground.  As the sound wave traveled from the launch pad toward the Launch Control Center I could feel the building of the sound as the ground trembled.  Then I felt the "ripple of wind" on my clothes as the sound passed.  It was just too cool!

Yesterday, I walked from my office building to the tow way to see Space Shuttle Atlantis where it stopped for a photo op on its way to the Vehicle Assembly Building, an event called "Roll Over."  The last time this will ever happen for a Space Shuttle.  One of the many "lasts" in the coming weeks.

OK, enough of the day job stuff.

Aren't these cards cute?  I designed these for Make & Takes for Sale-A-Bration workshops in February and for the SASS Stamp Club in March.  I also made a stack of the "D is for Dog" cards as a gift for a Puppy Shower.

The card base is Crumb Cake.  The P is for Paw Standard Stampin' Around Wheel was inked with Crumb Cake ink and rolled across the bottom edge of the card front.  The right side of a rectangle of Soft Suede cardstock was punched with the Scallop Trim Border punch and then adhered near the lower right corner of the cardfront.  A slightly smaller rectangle of Marina Mist cardstock was adhered, centered, to the un-punched area of the Early Espresso cardstock with Stampin' Dimensionals.  A slightly smaller rectangle of Naturals White cardstock was rolled with the P is for Paw wheel inked with Crumb Cake ink along the left side and a length of Marina Mist 3/8" Taffeta ribbon wrapped around the left side of the cardstock and knotted on front.  To the side of the paw tracks, the cat or dog was stamped (D is for Dog or C is for Cat stamp sets) using Soft Suede ink.  The corresponding sentiment for the cat or dog was stamped using Early Espresso ink.  The focal point was completed by adhering the Naturals White cardstock, centered, to the Marina Mist cardstock using SNAIL.

CisforCat_DisforDog_Inside
(click on card to see larger image)

The inside sentiment area of the card was lined with a piece of Naturals White cardstock.  As with the Naturals White cardstock on the focal point, the P is for Paw wheel was inked with Crumb Cake ink and rolled along the left edge of the cardstock.  The lower right corner of the cardstock was punched with the Scallop Trim Corner punch to add a little interest and then the liner was adhered to the inside sentiment area of the card with SNAIL.

C_is_for_Cat_Envelope

The P is for Paw wheel was inked one more time with Crumb Cake ink and rolled along the left front edge of the Medium Crumb Cake envelope.  The C is for Cat or D is for Dog image was stamped near the lower left corner of the envelope front using Early Espresso ink.

A fun and easy card to make.  And a shoe-in candidate for a quick stack of note cards when you need a gift for a dog lover, a cat lover, your pet groomer, or your Veterinarian.

Sail Away to the Future (Summer Mini Catalog Blog Hop)

Hello!

Here's the final follow-up installment for the projects featured during the Summer Mini Catalog Blog Hop.  It's also the only project that does not use the Beyond the Garden Designer Series Paper as part of the design element.  That's because this card was designed for a young man who graduated from Florida State University at the beginning of May.  I've known this great guy since he was 18 months old and can understand his parent's excitement and pride at his accomplishment.  So it makes sense that I would include Cherry Cobbler and More Mustard in this card to bring to mind the Garnet and Gold of the Seminoles.

Graduation_Card
(click on card to see larger image)

The card base for this card is Night of Navy cardstock (5 1/2" x 8 1/2", scored at 4 1/4" on the 8 1/2" length).  A piece of Cherry Cobbler cardstock was cut to 3 1/2" x 3 3/4", punched along one of the 3 1/2" lengths with the Scallop Border punch, and adhered to the card front with SNAIL.  The left and bottom edges of the cardstock area approximately 1/8" from the left and bottom edges of the card front and the scallop border faces toward the right side of the card front.  A piece of More Mustard cardstock was cut to 3 1/8" x 3 3/8" and adhered to the Cherry Cobbler Cardstock so that the top, left, and bottom edges of the Cherry Cobbler cardstock extends approximately 1/16" beyond the edges of the More Mustard cardstock.  The Sail Away single stamp was inked with Night of Navy ink and stamped on a piece of Whisper White cardstock (3" x 3 1/4").  The stamped image was adhered, centered, to the More Mustard cardstock.

A 70" piece (give or take a few inches) of Whisper White/Cherry Cobbler Baker's Twine was wrapped around the top area of the card front and tied off on the inside of the card front.  (Use Paper Snips to trim the ends of the twine close to the knot.)

The "Way To Go Congrats Well Done" sentiment from the Happy Greetings stamp set was stamped on Whisper White cardstock using Cherry Cobbler ink.  The pen tip of the More Mustard Stampin' Write Marker was used to fill in the letters of "Congrats".  Then the sentiment was punched with the Decorative Label punch.  A double mat of Cherry Cobbler and More Mustard was placed behind the sentiment.  (For information about how to create a mat for the Decorative Label punch, see this post.)  The sentiment was adhered to the card front with Stampin' Dimensionals with the center of the sentiment aligned with the scallop edge of the Cherry Cobbler cardstock and the top edge of the sentiment approximately 3/8" from the top edge of the Cherry Cobbler cardstock.

Graduation_Card_Inside
(click on card to see larger image)

The inside sentiment area of the card was lined with Whisper White cardstock.  The Sail Away image was stamped near the left edge of the liner using Night of Navy ink.  Note that the left-most part of the stamp image is not utilized (the area just to the left of the spinnaker).

Graduation_Card_Envelope
(click on envelope to see larger image)

The Sail Away image was stamped one more time with Night of Navy ink at the lower left front corner of the Whisper White envelope.  Note that the left-most part of the stamp image is not utilized (the area just to the left of the spinnaker) and that the bottom of the image is snugged up with the bottom edge of the envelope.

The Sail Away single stamp was the first thing I put on "the list" when I began to identify the items that I wanted to pre-order from the Summer Mini Catalog (a perk for Stampin' Up Demonstrators so that we can have samples ready to show when the new catalogs go "live").  The image reminded me of family picnics at a local riverfront park where my sisters, brothers and I would take turns sailing with Dad on the river.  Even now I can hear his voice quietly calling out directions for trimming the sails or to come about.  The sounds of the water flowing by, the birds overhead, and the wind in the sails are forever locked in my heart along with the memory of my father's face alight with joy--a constant expression while he was sailing.
