A Box Full of Tags With Gilded Cages

Hello!  Thanks for stopping by!

This is the final installment for the projects I showcased during the Stampin' Addicts New Catalog Mega Blog Hop last weekend.  This blog post focuses on the third project:  the tag box and gift tags.

We'll start with the tag box.  The Fancy Favor die for the Big Shot was used to create the box using Rose Red Textured cardstock.  The Whisper White cardstock lid of the box uses the Top Note die for the Big Shot embossed with the Perfect Polka Dots Textured Impressions embossing folder.

The box is made normally, using Sticky Strip to adhere the side and bottom of the box.  The edges of a strip of Brights Patterns Designer Series Paper were sponged with Rose Red ink and then adhered along the bottom edge of the box.  This piece was topped with a strip of Bashful Blue cardstock punched with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch and the edges sponged with Bashful Blue ink.  The largest bird cage was stamped with Versamark on Whisper White cardstock, dusted with Gold Stampin' Emboss powder, and heat embossed.  A medium bird image was stamped inside the cage with Rose Red ink.  The 1/16" circle punch was used to punch the hole in the hanging ring at the top of the bird cage.  Stampin' Dimensionals were used to adhere the bird cage to the front of the box.

Two score lines were created along the width of the Whisper White embossed Top Note, each one 1 1/8" to the left and right of the center point to create the overhang for the box top.  The back overhang is adhered to the box with a piece of Sticky Strip.  A Velcro dot is used to create the closure mechanism for the box front.  The edges of the box top are sponged with Rose Red ink.  The front of the box top is decorated with a Rose Red heart punched with the Small Heart punch.  A heart Bitty Button is positioned at the center of the punched heart with Dotto and then a Paper Piercer was used to punch holes through the button holes and into the cardstock heart.  Linen Thread is inserted into the holes in the cardstock heart, through the heart button, and knotted at the front of the button.  Mini Glue Dots attach the heart to the center point on the box front.

There are three different designs for the tags.  I made two of each deisgn and all six of the tags fit comfortably inside the tag box.

The first tag design uses a Marina Mist base card with the fold for this tag at the top of the gift card.  The edges of a strip of Brights Patterns Designer Series Paper were sponged with Rose Red ink and then adhered along the bottom edge of the tag. The medium bird image was stamped inside the cage with Rose Red ink.  A 1/16" circle punch was used to punch the hole in the hanging ring at the top of the bird cage.  A Wild Wasabi branch was punched using the 2-Step Bird punch.  The branch was slid through the hanging ring and both the branch and bird cage were adhered to the tag with SNAIL.  The edges of a piece of Whisper White cardstock were sponged with Marina Mist ink and then the cardstock was adhered to the inside sentiment area of the tag.  The 1/8" circle punch on the Crop-A-Dile was used to punch a hole in the upper left corner of the tag.  A piece of Whisper White 1/8" Taffeta ribbon was threaded through the hole and knotted.  Paper Snips were used to trim the ends of the ribbon.

The second tag design uses a Regal Rose base card with the fold on the left side of the tag.  The edges of a strip of Brights Patterns Designer Series Paper were sponged with Rose Red ink and then adhered along the bottom edge of the tag front.  This piece was topped with a strip of Rose Red cardstock punched with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch and the edges sponged with Rose Red ink.  The smallest bird cage was stamped with Versamark on Whisper White cardstock, dusted with Gold Stampin' Emboss powder, and heat embossed.  The body of the largest bird image was stamped inside the bird cage (to rest on the perch) with Marina Mist ink.  A Craft Knife was used to create a slit in the hanging ring at the top of the bird cage.  A Wild Wasabi branch was punched using the 2-Step Bird punch.  The branch was slid through the slit in the hanging ring and both the branch and the bird cage were adhered to the front of the tag with SNAIL.  The edges of a piece of Whisper White cardstock were sponged with Regal Rose ink and then the cardstock was adhered to the inside sentiment area of the tag.

The final tag design uses a Bashful Blue base card with the fold on the left side of the tag.  The edges of a strip of Brights Patterns Designer Series Paper were sponged with Rose Red ink and then adhered along the bottom edge of the tag front.  This piece was topped with a strip of Marina Mist cardstock punched with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch and the edges sponged with Marina Mist ink.  The medium bird cage was stamped with Versamark on Whisper White cardstock, dusted with Gold Stampin' Emboss powder, and heat embossed.  The smallest bird image was stamped inside the cage with Rose Red ink.  The Crop-A-Dile 1/8" circle punch was used to create a hole in the hanging ring at the top of the bird cage.  A Wild Wasabi branch was punched using the 2-Step Bird punch.  The branch was slid through the hole in the hanging ring and both the branch and bird cage were adhered to the tag with SNAIL.  The edges of a piece of Whisper White cardstock were sponged with Bashful Blue ink and then the cardstock was adhered to the inside sentiment area of the tag.

I really enjoyed designing all of the projects for the Blog Hop with the Aviary stamp set.  Of course, whimsical designs are not everyone's cup of tea; but you'll find that the basic design of these projects lend themselves easily to use with many other stamp set styles.  Give these projects a try!

Looking forward to your next visit!

Hangin' Out With the Birds

Hi there!  Glad you could stop by!

As promised, here's the second installment for the projects I showcased during the Stampin' Addicts New Catalog Mega Blog Hop.  This blog post focuses on the second project:  the scrapbook pages.

In almost every case, the design used for a 3" x 6" greeting card is a slam dunk for a 6" x 6" scrapbook page.  So, the card design described in the previous post is the basis for this scrapbook page.  (For a two-page layout, this would be the left hand page.)

Aviary_6x6_Left

(click on the scrapbook page to see a larger image)

However, you'll note that there are a few differences:

  • The first is that I randomly stamped all the bird images with Versamark to create a background on the Wild Wasabi base page
  • The second is that the sentiment has been removed from its spot at the Rose Red strip punched with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch
  • The third is not as easily seen in the photo, but if you look closely you'll see that there's a bit of dimension associated with the Rose Red bird perched atop the bird cage.  I stamped the small bird in Rose Red to sit atop the gold embossed bird cage and then stamped it again on a scrap piece of Whisper White cardstock.  I cut out the bird, no easy feat with the size of that tiny bird, put a piece of Stampin' Dimensional on the back (a great way to use the border pieces on the Stampin' Dimensional sheet), and placed it directly on top of the stamped bird atop the gold embossed cage.  I'm trying very hard not to sing "I'm Only A Bird In A Gilded Cage" while typing this...  I received a comment about the song during the Blog Hop and haven't been able to get it out of my head whenever I think about this stamp set!

The second scrapbook page uses the same color base page and patterned paper/Dotted Scallop Ribbon strip as the previous page, just flipped from the bottom to the top of the page.  (For a two page layout, this would be the right hand page.)

Certainly Celery and Garden Green branches punched with the 2-Step Bird punch are decorated with the bird images from the Aviary stamp set.  These birds were stamped on a scrap of Whisper White cardstock and cut out with Paper Snips.  They are attached to the branches with bits of Stampin' Dimensionals.  The top left bird is the medium bird image stamped in Marina Mist.  The bird directly below the medium bird is the large bird image, also stamped with Marina Mist, but when I cut him out I decided not to include his legs so that it would seem like he was sitting on the branch rather than standing.  On the right side, the owl image was inked with Early Espresso ink.  I used a Blender Pen (Thanks, Diane!) to remove the Early Espresso ink from his tummy feathers and then inked his tummy feathers with a Crumb Cake marker, huffed on the stamp to remoisten the ink and then stamped the owl on the Whisper White cardstock scrap.  He's adhered to his branch with a bit of Stampin' Dimensional, too.

The upper branch on the right side is used to hang a medium bird cage.  The bird cage was stamped with Versamark and heat embossed with Gold Stampin' Emboss powder.  The hanging ring at the top of the cage was punched with the 1/8" circle punch on the Crop-A-Dile and a piece of Marina Mist 1/8" Taffeta ribbon was threaded through the hole and knotted.  A Marina Mist medium bird was stamped inside the cage.  The cage is adhered to the base page with Stampin' Dimensionals.

My next blog post will show the final project from the Blog Hop, the Tag Box and Tags.

I'm looking forward to your visit!

A Whimsical Note of Encouragement

Hi!  Thanks for visiting!

As promised, here's the first installment on how the projects for the Stampin' Addicts New Catalog Mega Blog Hop were made.  This blog post focuses on the first project shown:  the greeting card.

When I opened my new 2010-2011 Stampin' Up! Idea Book and Catalog, the first stamp set on my "had to have" list was Aviary.  I just love whimsical designs and this one is just too cute!  I immediately began to envision the projects I could make with the fun images.

For the greeting card, I used my favorite bird and bird cage images from this stamp set.  Since they were small, it just seemed right to make a 3" x 6" card.

The card base is Wild Wasabi.  Along the bottom of the card front I attached a piece of Rose Red/Pretty in Pink patterned paper from the Brights Patterns Designer Series Paper Pack.  But before I attached the top edge of the paper to the card base, I tucked in a sentiment from the Occasional Quotes (Level 3 Hostess) stamp set.  This sentiment was inked with a Marina Mist marker, stamped onto Whisper White cardstock, and then punched with the Curly Label punch.  You can see that I kept the sentiment in the upper half of the punch image.  By the way, this sentiment image is actually one long image.  I inked the first two words and stamped them, then cleaned the stamp, stamped the clean stamp on scrap paper a few times to remove the residual moisture from the stamp, then inked the remaining two words and stamped them below the first two words.

The punched image was matted with a piece of Marina Mist cardstock created with the Big Shot and the Curly Label Punch Window (Curly Label Bigz XL die).  The edges of the Marina Mist cardstock were sponged with Marina Mist ink.  Then the bottom, left and right edges of the patterned paper were sponged with Rose Red ink.  The top edge of the patterned paper was covered with a strip of Rose Red cardstock punched with the Dotted Scallop Ribbon punch.  (The edges of the Rose Red strip were sponged with Rose Red ink prior to adhering.)

The bird cage was stamped on Whisper White cardstock with Versamark, dusted with Gold Stampin' Emboss powder, and heat embossed.  Once cooled, the bird was stamped with Rose Red to look like he's sitting on top of the hanging loop for the bird cage.  A teeny tiny bow of Marina Mist 1/8" Taffeta ribbon attaches to the cage with a Mini Glue Dot.  The Whisper White cardstock was sponged with Marina Mist ink and matted to a piece of Rose Red cardstock (edges sponged with Rose Red ink) and a piece of Bashful Blue cardstock (edges sponged with Bashful Blue ink).  This piece was adhered to the card front with Stampin' Dimensionals.

The interior sentiment area of the card was lined with Whisper White cardstock; the edges sponged with Wild Wasabi ink.  It features the corresponding sentiment from the Occasional Quotes stamp set stamped with Marina Mist ink.  The medium bird cage was stamped with Rose Red ink and the medium sized bird image (stamped with Marina Mist ink) looks out.

This same bird cage/bird combination also decorates the lower left front of the Small Open End envelope that fits this size card.

Before I close, I just want to mention the new Patterns Designer Series Paper Packs.  I am so tickled that Stampin' Up! created these paper packs!  It always bothered me that you could only buy one color of patterned paper and only for a limited number of colors.  I could never find enough uses for the entire pack of paper!  OR the color of paper I needed wasn't available.  I think these paper packs, featuring colors from the entire color family--Brights, Subtles, Regals, Neutrals, and the In Colors--are a much better idea and certainly a great "bang for the buck!"

Thanks so much for visiting.  My next blog post will show how easily this 3" x 6" card becomes a scrapbook page, or two.

Looking forward to your next visit!
