Today's post provides the how-to's for creating one of the cards designed for the Stamp Review Crew Blog Hop featuring the Bubble Over stamp set. To see a line up of all the Stampin' Up! artists who participated in the hop, click here. To begin the hop, click here.
So many of the cards you see today feature a watercolor wash of some kind for the background. I really like the soft look and the interest you can create by mixing colors, textures, and techniques. For this card, I used emboss resist on watercolor paper that was washed with color created using a reinker.
This card begins with a piece of watercolor paper swiped with the Embossing Buddy and then randomly stamped with the doodle circle image from the Bubble Over stamp set using Versamark ink. The small heart image was stamped inside the doodle circles, also using Versamark ink. The stamped images were covered with Clear Stampin' Emboss Powder and the excess tapped back into the container. Then the embossing powder was melted with the Heat Tool.
Five to seven drops of Calypso Coral re-inker was added to about 3 tablespoons of water (I used an empty plastic button container) and stirred well with the Aquapainter. Then the fun begins:
- The embossed watercolor paper was lightly spritzed with water
- A wet Aquapainter was dipped into the Calypso Coral and water mixture and then brushed across the watercolor paper to cover the paper. The Aquapainter was repeatedly dipped into clear water and then into the reinker/water mixture and brushed across the watercolor paper until the desired color was achieved. Note that the color will dry slightly lighter than it appears wet
- A damp Aquapainter was dipped into the reinker-water mixture and holding the brush tip over the watercolor paper, the brush was tapped lightly with the fingertip of the other hand to splatter drops of ink randomly over the watercolor paper. Note that some drops will be larger than others. In addition, be aware that the splatter will likely stray from the paper to adjacent areas of your work surface
- Clean the brush and then wet the brush with clear water and repeat the splatter process over the watercolor paper
- Allow the paper to dry
- Rub a clean, dry paper towel over the embossed areas of the watercolor paper to remove any ink from the clear embossing
The focal point was created with a piece of Calypso Coral cardstock die cut with the Big Shot using the larger rounded end label framelit from the Bottles & Bubbles Framelits and placing the larger cut out die across the inside center of the framelit to create cut-outs in the rounded ends of the label. A piece of Basic Gray shimmer ribbon from the Shimmer Ribbon Combo Pack (a Sale-A-Bration item that will only be available for a couple more days...) was threaded through the cut outs, wrapped around the center of the watercolor paper, and the ribbon knotted to the left of the front of the watercolor paper. If necessary, Mini Glue Dots can be placed behind the Calypso Coral cardstock to hold it in place.
The watercolor paper was matted with a slightly larger piece of Basic Gray cardstock and then adhered at the center of the card front. The card base is made with Thick Whisper White cardstock.
A piece of Thick Whisper White cardstock was die cut with the Big Shot using the smaller round end label framelit. The die cut was adhered over the center of the Calypso Coral label using Stampin' Dimensionals. A piece of Basic Gray cardstock was die cut with the Big Shot using the flattened bottle cap framelit and the die cut adhered at the center of the Whisper White label. The "Thank You" greeting was stamped on a piece of Thick Whisper White cardstock using Calypso Coral ink and punched out with the 3/4" circle punch. The punched greeting was adhered at the center of the bottle cap die cut.
The doodle circle image was randomly stamped along the left side of the inside sentiment area of the card using Basic Gray ink. The heart image was stamped inside the doodle circles using Calypso Coral ink.
A piece of Calypso Coral cardstock was die cut with the Big Shot using the larger rounded end label and adhered at the upper center of the inside sentiment area. The "Your Kindness is most Refreshing" sentiment was stamped on a piece of Thick Whisper White cardstock and die cut with the Big Shot using the smaller rounded end label. The Whisper White label was adhered at the center of the Calypso Coral label.
The doodle circle image was randomly stamped across the flap of the Medium Whisper White Envelope using Basic Gray ink. [Tip: Place a scrap of paper between the envelope flap and the body of the envelope to contain the stamped images to the envelope flap.] The heart image was stamped inside the doodle circles using Calypso Coral ink.
I hope that you'll consider creating your own watercolor wash backgrounds for your creative projects. As you can see with this card, you probably already have all you need to begin the process.
